THE LIGHT WITHIN
Remembering What Has Always Been There
A Reflection on Inner Wisdom,
Self-Trust & the Quiet Light We Carry
There are moments when something becomes clear.
Not because we learned something new.
Not because someone gave us an answer.
Not because life suddenly changed around us.
But because, for a moment, we could finally see what had been there all along.
A truth we had been avoiding.
A longing we had forgotten.
A strength we had underestimated.
A knowing we had questioned so many times that we stopped recognizing it as our own.
Sometimes illumination does not arrive as revelation.
Sometimes…
it arrives as remembrance.
And perhaps that is one of the quiet invitations of August.
After standing at the threshold…
after asking what is ready to emerge…
we turn inward and notice the light that has been waiting there all along.
WE LEARN TO LOOK OUTSIDE OURSELVES
From the time we are young, much of life teaches us to look outward.
For answers.
For approval.
For reassurance that we’re making the right choice.
We learn to ask:
What should I do?
What will they think?
Am I doing this correctly?
What would someone else choose?
There is nothing wrong with seeking wisdom from others.
We need one another.
We learn through relationship, experience, teachers, stories, and the people who have walked before us.
But somewhere along the way, we can become so accustomed to hearing everyone else’s voice that we lose familiarity with our own.
The quiet inner voice becomes harder to recognize beneath the noise.
And eventually, we may begin to believe that wisdom lives everywhere…
except within us.
WHAT DO WE MEAN BY INNER LIGHT?
When I speak of the light within, I am not speaking of constant positivity.
I am not speaking of becoming endlessly peaceful, certain, healed, or radiant.
And I am certainly not speaking of pretending darkness doesn’t exist.
Our inner light is something much more human.
It is the part of us that recognizes truth.
The compassion that remains after disappointment.
The courage that whispers try again.
The creativity asking to be expressed.
The boundary we know we need.
The tenderness we protect.
The curiosity that keeps us growing.
The quiet awareness that says:
This feels right.
Or sometimes…
This no longer feels like me.
Our light does not make us perfect.
It helps us see.
PERHAPS YOUR LIGHT NEVER LEFT
There are seasons when we feel deeply connected to ourselves.
We know what matters.
Our intuition feels clear.
Our choices feel aligned.
We recognize ourselves.
And then there are other seasons.
Life becomes busy.
Relationships change.
Responsibilities grow.
Something hurts.
We question ourselves.
We adapt.
We survive.
And slowly, what once felt clear becomes harder to hear.
It can feel as though we have lost ourselves.
But perhaps we haven’t.
Perhaps some parts of us simply became quiet while we tended to everything else.
The woman who dreamed.
The woman who trusted herself.
The woman who created simply because creating brought her joy.
The woman who knew when something wasn’t right.
The woman who laughed easily.
The woman who could sit beneath a tree without feeling she needed to be somewhere else.
She may not be gone.
She may simply be waiting to be noticed again.
WHEN WE DIM WHAT IS TRUE
Sometimes our light becomes difficult to recognize because we have learned to make ourselves smaller.
Not always consciously.
Perhaps you stopped sharing an idea because it was dismissed.
Perhaps you learned that keeping the peace felt safer than speaking honestly.
Perhaps something you loved seemed impractical, so you placed it aside.
Perhaps you became so practiced at caring for everyone else that you stopped asking what you needed.
Perhaps you learned to distrust your intuition because you couldn’t explain it logically.
Little by little, we can begin editing ourselves.
Not because there is anything wrong with who we are…
but because belonging can sometimes feel easier when we take up less space.
Yet the parts we quiet do not necessarily disappear.
They wait.
And sometimes all it takes is a moment of stillness for one of them to whisper:
I’m still here.
REMEMBRANCE IS DIFFERENT FROM REINVENTION
We live in a world that constantly invites us to become.
Become healthier.
Become more successful.
Become more productive.
Become more confident.
Become a better version of yourself.
There can be beauty in growth.
But there can also be exhaustion in constantly believing we are unfinished.
What if the next chapter of your life does not begin by asking:
Who should I become?
What if it begins with:
What have I forgotten about who I already am?
That question feels different.
There is no fixing in it.
No performance.
No finish line.
Only curiosity.
And perhaps a little tenderness for all the versions of ourselves we have been along the way.
HOW REMEMBRANCE BEGINS
Remembrance rarely arrives through force.
We cannot demand that our inner wisdom speak louder.
But we can create conditions where we are more able to hear it.
A walk without headphones.
A morning before the phone is opened.
A bath taken slowly.
Sitting beside water.
Watching the light change through the trees.
Writing without trying to make sense of what appears.
Taking three breaths before saying yes.
Allowing ourselves to notice what brings expansion…
and what brings contraction.
These moments may seem small.
But small moments of listening begin rebuilding a relationship with ourselves.
And self-trust is rarely created through one enormous decision.
It grows through the quiet experience of listening…
responding…
and discovering that our inner voice is still there.
SOUL WRITING
Remembering the Light
Find a quiet place where you can write without needing to arrive anywhere.
Begin with:
What part of myself am I ready to see more clearly?
Then allow yourself to explore:
What did I once know about myself that I have forgotten?
Where have I been making myself smaller?
What brings me alive when no one is watching?
What truth keeps returning, even when I try to dismiss it?
And finally:
If I trusted that something wise already lives within me, what would I listen to today?
You don’t need to answer every question.
Follow the one that creates a feeling inside you.
That may be where the doorway is.
THE LIGHT DOES NOT ASK TO BE PROVEN
Perhaps this is what I most want us to remember as we move through August:
Your inner light does not need an audience.
It does not need to be impressive.
It does not need to become a business, a calling, a transformation, or something the world applauds.
Sometimes your light looks like choosing peace.
Sometimes it is making art no one sees.
Sometimes it is saying no.
Sometimes it is beginning again.
Sometimes it is sitting quietly beneath the morning sky and feeling, for the first time in a long while…
I am here.
That is enough.
A GENTLE INVITATION INTO INNER MEDICINE
If something in this reflection has awakened a desire to listen more deeply, Inner Medicine — The Rhythm of the Soul is one of the paths within Gaia Sacred Space created for this kind of inward journey.
It is a place for the moments when we are called to tend what is happening within—to explore healing, intuition, transformation, and the quiet wisdom that can become clearer when we give ourselves space to listen.
Not because someone else holds the answers for you.
But because sometimes ritual, meditation, reflection, and Soul Writing can create the sacred conditions in which your own knowing becomes easier to hear.
A CLOSING REFLECTION
Last week, we stood at the threshold and asked:
What within me is ready to step forward?
Perhaps this week we discover something beautiful.
What is stepping forward may not be new at all.
It may be something ancient within you.
Something familiar.
Something you once knew before the world became so loud.
You do not need to chase it.
You do not need to become worthy of it.
Become quiet enough to notice.
The light is still there.
And perhaps…
it always has been.
With warmth,
Patti
