The Wisdom of the In-Between
Learning to Honor the Season
Before the Answer Arrives
There is a moment in September when I begin to notice the light.
It is not autumn light exactly.
Not yet.
The trees may still be green.
The afternoons may still carry summer’s warmth.
Flowers may still be blooming in the garden.
And yet something has changed.
Morning arrives with a different softness.
Evening comes a little sooner.
A breeze moves through the trees and, for just a moment, carries the faintest suggestion of another season.
Nothing has fully ended.
Nothing new has completely begun.
We are somewhere between.
And I have come to believe there is wisdom here.
Not only in the turning of the Earth…
but in all the places in our own lives where we find ourselves standing between what was and what will be.
WE ARE SO QUICK TO ASK WHAT COMES NEXT
The in-between can be an uncomfortable place.
We like beginnings because they offer possibility.
We understand endings because, even when they hurt, they give us something we can name.
But the middle?
The place where something has changed and we do not yet know what that change means?
That can be harder.
Perhaps you have outgrown something, but you do not yet know what belongs in its place.
Perhaps a dream that once felt certain no longer fits.
Perhaps you have begun setting boundaries and are still discovering who you are when you stop saying yes automatically.
Perhaps you know you cannot return to an old version of your life…
but you cannot yet see the new one clearly.
And almost immediately, the questions begin.
What am I supposed to do now?
Where is this leading?
When will I know?
What comes next?
We reach for the answer because uncertainty can feel like standing on ground that has not yet become solid beneath our feet.
But perhaps the in-between is not asking us for an answer.
Perhaps it is asking us to stay long enough to hear what is changing.
THE EARTH DOES NOT RUSH HER THRESHOLDS
Nature rarely moves according to the clean lines we place on a calendar.
Autumn does not suddenly arrive because a date tells the Earth it should.
The season gathers itself gradually.
A leaf turns.
The angle of sunlight changes.
Seeds ripen.
Birdsong shifts.
Plants begin directing their energy differently.
Some things continue blooming while others have already begun letting go.
For a while, both seasons seem to exist together.
Summer is still here.
Autumn is already arriving.
There is no contradiction in that.
The Earth seems perfectly comfortable holding both.
Maybe this is one of the things she can teach us.
We can be grateful for what has been…
and know it is time for something to change.
We can love who we were…
and feel ourselves becoming someone different.
We can grieve an ending…
and quietly sense possibility beside it.
We can know something deeply…
and still have questions.
Two truths can live together while we cross a threshold.
PERHAPS YOU ARE NOT LOST
There are seasons when the old markers disappear before the new ones arrive.
The path that once felt obvious no longer does.
The things that once motivated us lose their pull.
We may feel less certain about what we want.
Less willing to force what no longer fits.
More aware of questions we used to be able to ignore.
It is easy to interpret this as being lost.
But I wonder…
What if you are simply between maps?
The map that brought you here belonged to an earlier part of your journey.
The next one has not been drawn yet.
There may be nothing wrong with your inability to see the entire path.
Perhaps you are being invited to pay attention differently.
Not to the distant destination.
To what is beneath your feet.
To what your body is telling you.
To what feels quieter now.
To what keeps returning.
To what no longer asks to be carried.
To the small signs of life emerging where you did not expect them.
Sometimes the next direction does not arrive as a plan.
Sometimes it begins as a whisper:
More of this.
Less of that.
Not anymore.
Not yet.
Stay.
Begin.
THE SACRED WORK OF NOT KNOWING
There are things we can only discover when we stop demanding immediate clarity.
This does not mean becoming passive.
It does not mean ignoring decisions that need to be made or waiting indefinitely for some perfect sign.
It means recognizing that discernment has its own season.
A seed beneath the soil may appear to be doing nothing.
But unseen work is taking place.
Roots are forming.
Conditions are being read.
Something is preparing before it becomes visible.
Perhaps there are times when we need that kind of hidden season too.
A time when the work is not to produce an answer…
but to become quiet enough to recognize one when it arrives.
A PRACTICE FOR THE IN-BETWEEN
Sometime this week, step outside.
You do not need a beautiful forest or a sacred place.
Stand in your yard.
Sit beneath a tree.
Walk through your neighborhood.
Find somewhere you can notice the September Earth.
Instead of looking for autumn, notice the threshold.
Look for what is still summer.
Then notice what has begun to change.
Perhaps one leaf has turned while the branch remains green.
Perhaps a flower is fading beside another still in bloom.
Perhaps the afternoon is warm, but the shadows have grown longer.
Let yourself witness two seasons existing at once.
Then gently ask:
Where am I holding two seasons within myself?
Perhaps there is something you are leaving…
and something you are not yet ready to begin.
Something you know…
and something you are still discovering.
Something you are grieving…
and something quietly calling you forward.
You do not need to resolve the tension between them.
For a few moments, simply allow both to belong.
SOUL WRITING FOR THE THRESHOLD
If you feel called to continue with your journal, begin with:
I am somewhere between…
And write.
Then explore:
What no longer feels entirely like mine?
What is beginning to stir, even though I cannot fully name it yet?
What might become possible if I stopped asking myself to know what comes next?
Let the page remain unfinished if it needs to.
An unfinished question can still be sacred.
THERE IS WISDOM BEFORE CLARITY
Soon, the Earth will arrive at the Autumn Equinox.
For one brief turning point, we will honor the relationship between light and darkness before the Northern Hemisphere continues its journey into longer nights.
There will be time for gathering.
For gratitude.
For release.
For asking what we wish to carry into the inward season.
But we are not there yet.
And perhaps there is something beautiful about not being there yet.
We are standing at the edge.
Watching.
Listening.
Allowing the season to reveal herself slowly.
Maybe your own life deserves the same tenderness.
You do not have to force the next chapter open.
You do not need to name what is still becoming.
You do not need to turn uncertainty into an answer simply so you can feel as though you are moving.
Sometimes the sacred path is not forward or backward.
Sometimes it is simply…
here.
In the quiet place between what has been and what has not yet arrived.
And perhaps, if we stay here long enough to listen,
we may discover that the in-between was never empty.
It was becoming.
With warmth,
Patti
